  Understanding Glass Manifestation Regulations

Why Is Glass Manifestation Important?

Large expanses of clear glass, such as in doors, partitions, and shopfronts, can pose a serious safety risk if not properly marked. To prevent accidental collisions, UK Building Regulations require specific visual indicators known as manifestation to be applied to these glazed areas.

Glass manifestation ensures that glass is clearly visible to building users, reducing the risk of injury and improving accessibility—particularly for individuals with visual impairments.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about glass manifestation requirements.

According to Approved Document K (Protection from falling, collision and impact) and BS 8300 (Design of buildings for disabled people), glass in critical locations must include visible markings at two key height bands:

  • Lower Band: Between 850mm and 1000mm from floor level
  • Upper Band: Between 1400mm and 1600mm from floor level

These bands must be clearly visible from both sides of the glazing.

Manifestation can take many forms, including:

  • Frosted or etched dots, squares, or lines
  • Solid or broken bands
  • Logos or decorative designs
  • Opaque or translucent film

What’s most important is that the manifestation contrasts with the background in all lighting conditions and is permanent or durable.

Glass manifestation is typically required on:

  • Glass doors and side panels
  • Frameless glass partitions
  • Shopfronts and commercial entrances
  • Balustrades or glass barriers
  • Any full-height glass near walkways or entrances
